George Stevenson died at the age of 88 surrounded by his family on September 9th, 2018 after a battle with kidney disease.

 

He was born in Boston on June 2, 1930 to Alice Young Stevenson of Lisbon, NH and Henry Arthur Stevenson of Withrop, Massachusetts.
 
After graduating from Southside High School in Rockville Center, Long Island, in 1948, George became a structure mechanic on B24s for the US Navy, then a quartermaster on the USS Smalley DD565 during the Korean war.

 

Upon his discharge, he attended the University of Vermont, graduating in 1957.

 

Following that, George opened a ski lodge in Killington, Vermont, operated ocean vessels from Canada to the Mexican border doing shrimp research, owned two boatyards, worked as a commercial fisherman, and he built the Market Basket in Rockport with his wife at the time, Dianne Stevenson.

 

His children were never quite sure how to succinctly answer the question, "What does your father do for a living?"

 

Twenty years ago he was captivated by the beauty of Pieri Pond on Appleton Ridge, where he built a cottage and spent the rest of his life appreciating the land and sharing it with others. George was grateful for the time he was able to spend there and the people he met because of it.

George was married twice, the first time to June Stone, of Vermont, and the second to Dianne Hornig Stevenson of Lincolnville, Maine.

 

He is survived by his daughter Stacy Stevenson and her husband, David Paffhausen, of Rockland; his son Jay Stevenson and his wife, Paula Michaud, of Scarborough; and his cousin Gloria Biow of Portland, Oregon, who was like a sister to him.

 

There will be a celebration of George's life to be held at Pieri Pond in Appleton on September 22nd at 2 p.m.
