Camden Hills seeks donated silverware to replace plastic in cafeteria

The Camden Hills Regional High School Windplanners team continues an initiative started last year to replace the plastic utensils in the cafeteria with reusable silverware and is seeking donations.

The goal is to reduce the school’s waste and plastic waste.

While the school community donated many pieces of silverware for students to use during meals at school, the Windplanners, a group of students, cite the need for more silverware especially forks and spoons, “to meet the demand of our school population and lunch schedule,” the Windplanners said in a news release.

“We underestimated how many utensils we would need and the number of students and staff that would prefer silverware to plasticware,” they wrote. “We are again seeking your contribution of unused silverware to our effort. Please look in your kitchen cupboards and drawers for silverware you no longer use.”

Drop-off bins have been placed at Midcoast Recreation Center, Camden Hannaford , Camden and Rockport public libraries, the YMCA, and the Lincolnville and Hope general stores.

“With your donations we hope to remove plastic utensils from our waste stream and also reduce our carbon footprint,” wrote the Windplanners. “All donations are much appreciated.”
