HALLOWELL — The Camden Hills varsity ice hockey team hit the road for the third consecutive time this season and challenged Gardiner at the Camden National Bank Ice Vault in Hallowell on Saturday, Dec. 15.

In the final game of the road series, the Windjammers secured a 6-2 victory to boost its record to 2-1.

Camden Hills will host John Bapst/Mount Desert Island/Bangor Christian at the Midcoast Recreation Center in Rockport on Wednesday, Dec. 19 in its home opener starting at 7 p.m.

Gardiner opened the scoring Saturday when Alex Grover tallied an unassisted goal on a power play before Nate VanLonkHuyzen of Camden Hills answered back to tie the game 1-1 when he scored off a Charlie Griebel and Bryce Tyler assist.

In the second period, the Windjammers scored three consecutive goals with Griebel notching a pair (Tyler assist on power play; Tyler and Quinn Brown assist on power play) and Levi Guay scoring one off an Andrew Orne and Quinn Brown assist on a power play.

Gardiner tallied one goal in the second period when Gabe Poirier found the back of the net of a Parker Smith assist.

The Windjammers scored twice more, for good measure, in the third period when Griebel found the back of the net once again, this time courtesy a Jason Greenleaf and Jackson Bernier assist, and when VanLonkHuyzen scored off a Eliza Roy assist.

Camden Hills head coach John Magri credited Jackson Bernier in the goalie net, Griebel, Blackwell as among the team’s key contributors.

Magri noted VanLonkhuyzen and Ben Wells performed well on special teams, while Wells and Michael Blackwell provided speed and physicality to wear down Gardiner.

Tyler provided “elite unself play and leadership” on Friday, according to Magri, and proved that he and Griebel are difficult to defend against.

“The checking line of Dylan Hastings, Nicholas Tausek, and Hayden Thibeault drew a Gardiner [p]enalty every shift they were out due to their hard forecheck so they really contributed by setting the stage for each of the Power Play goals in the second period,” said Magri.
