ROCKPORT — After nearly seven years, Camden Hills Regional High School athletic director Steve Alex has announced his resignation from leading the Windjammer athletic department.

Alex, who will leave his post at the end of this academic year, has accepted a civilian position with the U.S. Air Force as an air refueling mission planning specialist in Hawaii.

“My lifelong passion has always been military aviation and I am very excited to have the opportunity to serve in the Air Force once again,” he said. “I am very, very grateful for all of the support that everyone has given me and the friends that I have made over the last seven years here at CHRHS.”

Prior to being named the school’s athletic director, the Camden native spent one season as the Camden Hills girls varsity lacrosse head coach and three seasons as the school’s junior varsity girls soccer head coach.

This winter, Alex was the inaugural head coach of the school’s unified basketball team that played an exhibition schedule.

Alex graduated from Camden-Rockport High School in 1982 after playing soccer and basketball. Following his high school graduation, he joined the Maine Air National Guard 101st Air Refueling Wing in Bangor, also known as the “MAINEiacs.”

The AD position is being advertised by the school district and requires experience as a coach and athletic director certification from the state. Preferred qualifications, according to the job posting, include a master’s degree, prior experience as an athletic director and experience implementing Sports Done Right concepts.

The job posting notes Sports Illustrated previously named Camden Hills the top high school sports program in Maine due to the school’s abundance of conference, regional and state championships in a variety of sports.

Different Windjammer teams have also earned sportsmanship awards from the Maine Principals’ Association, the state’s high school sports governing body, in recent seasons.

The deadline to submit applications is April 19.

This is the second local athletic director position to open this calendar year as Mount View’s Chris Moreau resigned in February. The Mount View athletic director position is currently being filled by multiple district personnel with the position potentially being combined with the high school’s assistant principal position.
