Belfast Maskers’ to perform ‘A Christmas Story, The Musical’
BELFAST — The Belfast Maskers’ production of “A Christmas Story: The Musical” opens on Friday, November 30 at “The Bazz” — the company’s new Basil Burwell Community Theater.
The musical is based on the movie classic that runs round-the-clock on television every Christmas, which itself was based on stories by legendary radio humorist Jean Shepherd. Set in the 1940s in the fictional town of Hohman, Indiana, the musical follows 9-year-old Ralphie Parker and his quest for the Holy Grail of Christmas gifts—an Official Red Ryder carbine-action BB gun. Warned at every turn, “You’ll shoot your eye out,” Ralphie makes creative attempts to convince his teacher, mother, “Old Man,” and Santa to make his dream come true.
A tacky life-sized leg lamp, mortifying pink bunny pajamas, a giddily grumpy department store Santa, and a triple-dog-dare to lick a freezing flagpole are just a few of the memorable moments that stand between Ralphie and his Christmas wish. These timeless scenes, along with the show’s quirky humor and nostalgic warmth, bring a snapshot of life in 1940s small town American that will leave the whole family in a merry holiday mood.
The cast stars Mark Durbin as the Narrator; Mirabelle Kutsy-Durbin as Ralphie; Erik Perkins as The Old Man; Erica Rubin Irish as Mother; Silas Ociepka as Randy; Ada Curry as Schwartz; Jane Rubin Irish as Flick; Sasha Kutsy as Miss Shields; Isavel Lux as Scut Farkus; Chase Weaver, as Grover Dill; and Chip Curry as Santa.
Featured as Ralphie's classmates and their siblings are: Lottie Eastham, Lydia Schofield, Eva Oceipka, Esme Deschamps, Jack Reader, Brynn Newsom, Noah Gilchrist, Azure Walauski, Claire McConnell, Claire Gilchrist, Riley Hall, Lily Martinelli and Charlotte Martinelli. Kai Kutsy-Durbin, Lily Reader, and Sean McConnell appear as the dreaded Bumpus Hounds.
The adult ensemble includes Bob Nichols, Tiffany Schofield, Angela Domenichelli, David Wharfe, Paula Tripp, Sean Ociepka, Beth Whitman, and Matthew Pease.
The Belfast Maskers production team features director Wendy Schweikert, choreographers Michelle Cox and Michelle Lemieux, costumer Linda Marie, light and sound by Wylie Fowler and Jay Rosenberg, and music director John Cameron.
Nominated for three 2013 Tony Awards including Best Musical, the Associated Press calls “A Christmas Story: The Musical,” “a joyous Christmas miracle,” while The New York Times writes “You’d have to have a Grinch-sized heart not to feel a smile spreading across your face.”
The show runs from Nov. 30 through Dec. 9 at “The Bazz” — the Masker's new Basil Burwell Community Theater — at 17 Court St. For more information about tickets and times, visit belfastmaskers.com or call (207) 619-3256.
