Barefoot Days, Electric Nights: A Kid Reporter Lands in 60s Honolulu

Mon, 10/09/2017 - 7:00pm

David Butwin will present an illustrated talk on his book, Barefoot Days, Electric Nights: A Kid Reporter Lands in 60s Honolulu, on Tuesday, October 10, at 6:30 p.m. at the Rockland Public Library.

Barefoot Days, Electric Nights: A Kid Reporter Lands in 60s Honolulu brings to vivid life the years in Hawaii just after statehood when the social order was turning over, the Vietnam War was heating up and a young reporter arrived from Minnesota to cover the waterfront. Bulwarked by the bales of news articles and the hundreds of letters he wrote to family and friends, Butwin weaves a compelling narrative, peppered with his own Waikiki hijinks, sparked by a bizarre link to the war, and spooked by a singular event he calls "my night of terror."

A career journalist and travel writer, David Butwin is the author of a previous memoir, A Minnesota Kid: In Search of Heroes and Ghosts. He fancies himself a maven of beaches, bagels and baseball. He and his wife, Pamela, a graphic designer and artist, live in Leonia, N.J., and have had a small house on South Shore Road in Owls Head since 2009.

Rockland Public Library is located at 80 Union St. in Rockland. This event, sponsored by, Friends of Rockland Public Library, Rockland Public Library is free and open to the public. FMI: 594-0310.
