THOMASTON — On March 14, Thomaston Grammar School held its annual Family Fun Night. This year’s theme was Around the World with a focus on literacy.

Families traveled to Russia where they made paper stacking dolls and listened to the book, The Littlest Matryoshka.

From there, they went to Australia to design original Aboriginal dot art. Participants created their own bookmarks of a “dream” using paint dots of varied sizes.

The next stop was China, where families listened to Grandfather Tang and then configured tangrams from the story. Others celebrated the Chinese New Year reading Lin Yi’s Lantern, along with making their own paper lanterns.

The tradition of St. Patrick’s Day was celebrated with The Story of the Leprechaun, and a St. Paddy’s Day mobile was designed. Yetis and trolls were the focus of a folklore presentation of Iceland, and attendees took part in a Lego folklore challenge.

In Mexico, traditional music played and The Piniata the Farm Girl Hung was read while families made their own piniatas.

The last two stops were in Japan and Finland. Origami, the art of paper folding, was practiced, and participants in Finland learned about the Moomins.

The night topped off with pizza for supper and a book fair, which was hosted by the parents’ group.

“A great time was had by all,” said Thomaston Grammar, in a news release.
