CLINTON — The annual Fedco Tree Sale in Clinton, Maine has been a tradition for many, and a new discovery for others, said several of the people browsing on Saturday afternoon in the warehouse where the tree sale is held.

The annual event is typically held around the first weekend in May, and spans two days. The sale offers the public the opportunity to purchase wares of a handful of ancillary vendors in addition to proving a place to purchase Fedco’s own trees and plants. The 40-year-old company’s business is primarily conducted through mail order, and spring orders can be picked up at the sale.

Though the crowd had thinned as the sale wound down on Saturday, families happily filled shopping carts and boxes with trees, seedlings and related wares. A short distance away, the Fedco warehouse was open for seed purchases.

According to the Fedco website:

“We [Fedco] have been in the seed business since 1978. We took on the Tree order from John Bunker in 1983, added fall Bulbs in 1984, picked up potatoes from Tom Roberts in 1985, and the Organic Grower Supply order from MOFGA in 1988. Beginning from a Maine base with 98 orders the first year, after 36 years we now serve growers in all 50 states, filling over 34,000 orders totaling $4 million annually.”
