The Honorable George J. Mitchell to Address Graduates at University of Maine at Augusta Commencement Ceremonies

AUGUSTA-University of Maine at Augusta President Rebecca Wyke is pleased to announce that The Honorable George J. Mitchell, former U.S. Senate Majority Leader, will address graduates, family, friends, faculty, and staff at UMA's Commencement Ceremonies on May 12, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. in the Augusta Civic Center auditorium.

“UMA is honored to have Senator Mitchell participate in our Commencement activities,” said President Wyke. “His dedication to supporting Maine students who seek to further their education and pursue a post-secondary degree is unparalleled, and at the heart of UMA’s mission.”

Senator George Mitchell has had a long and distinguished career. He served for several years as Chairman of DLA Piper, now Chairman Emeritus. Before that he served as a federal judge; as Majority Leader of the United States Senate; as Chairman of peace negotiations in Northern Ireland which resulted in an agreement that ended an historic conflict; and most recently as U.S. Special Envoy to the Middle East. In 2008 Time Magazine described him as one of the 100 most influential people in the world.

Senator Mitchell is the author of five books. His most recent books are a memoir entitled The Negotiator: Reflections on an American Life, published in May
2015 and A Path To Peace, published in November 2016.

Over 500 students are eligible to graduate from UMA this spring. Forty-seven of those graduates have completed some or all course work at University College at Rockland, a Center of UMA. These local graduates will also be celebrated at a special event at URock on Saturday, May 5.
