Haste Makes Waste

Camden’s Planning Board will decide on January 2, 2014 at 5:00 PM at the Camden Opera House whether they will vote for or against recommending (to the Select Board) 71 lines of changes to Camden’s current zoning ordinance. These additions would change our zoning laws to accommodate the needs of Fox Hill, LLC’s first proposed tenant, McLean Hospital. Camden’s existing commercial zones already allow for a drug and alcohol rehab facility in our community. Spot Zoning Fox Hill on Bay View Street to commercial zoning would forever change the nature of this historic neighborhood and set a precedent that carries with it the unfortunate potential to affect all of Camden’s residential neighborhoods. As it is, Camden will review and rewrite our Comprehensive Plan in 2014 to place on our June 2015 Town Ballot. If haste makes waste, can this issue be studied in the larger context of our whole community and Camden’s needs, rather than being directed by undisclosed investors as represented by their numerous attorneys and hired guns? Virtually the only people who spoke in support of this zoning change proposal at the December 12 Planning Board Public Hearing were paid consultants for Fox Hill, LLC.

Sincerely,
Dorie Klein
