Adventures With Straws

True confession- I do not go out much but when I do I want to have a good time and usually a margarita.  I was at one of my favorite bars when I realized I forgot to say -NO STRAW.  It’s my lack of practice.  After a few sips I said to the bartender- you should ask folks if they want a straw.  He told me all their straws and event cups and to go containers are corn based and compostable and have been that way for years.  Which was good news- but I didn’t know.  Out of my 4 downtown bars, two do not serve cocktails straw/stirrers unless you ask, one serves traditional plastic and one pops in a corn straw.  This is true for margaritas I don’t know about other cocktails and I can see further research might be needed!  However none of these great establishments tells customers or has a “straws suck”  notice.

Obviously you do not need a straw to enjoy a cocktail.  When I want to drink with a straw I bring my own and this is usually a hot summer day and the need for an iced coffee drink.

Reusable straws can be made out of lots of material stainless steel, bamboo, silicone and make great stocking stuffers. Support clean oceans and a mermaid and check out the Mermaid Straw Company.
