Time to inhale the chili

ROCKPORT — Thirteen Pen Bay Medical Center departments headed “South of the Border” Friday, Sept. 16, as they competed in the organization’s second annual chili cookoff. Outgoing CEO, Mark Biscone joined the other judges and blind-tasted all 14 concoctions before voting for the best and (worst) dishes. There was also a People’s Choice category.

Here is a list of vitamins found in chili pepper, along with how much each vitamin contributes to the recommended daily allotment:

• 240 percent of vitamin-C (Ascorbic acid),
• 39 percent of vitamin B-6 (Pyridoxine),
• 32 percent of vitamin A,
• 13 percent of iron,
• 14 percent of copper,
•   7 percent of potassium.

— Quality Chili Peppers – Quality and Safety

— Chili Chicks – Pen Bay Waldo Healthcare Foundation

— The Red Hot Chili Preppers – Knox Center

More than $1,000 was raised by colleagues to benefit the Pen Bay Medical Center Community Wellness Trail

In an email, Pen Bay Medical Center thanked the judges and sponsors, including: Hormel Foods, Maritime Energy, Ole Food Service, Schulstad Bakery Solutions and Waypoint.

The judges included Rockport Town Manager Rick Bates, Coastal Healthcare Alliance CEO Mark Biscone, Pen Bay Medical Center COO Erik Frederik, Maritime Energy Customer Service Manager Tonya Madden and MaineHealth SVP of System Development Andy Patstone.
