Winter storm watch remains in effect for Midcoast

GRAY — A winter storm watch is in effect for the Midcoast, among other areas, from 8 a.m. to midnight Saturday, Jan. 24.

A coastal storm "may" bring heavy snow to the coastal plain of Maine Saturday, into Saturday night, according to the National Weather Service Friday.

Low pressure is expected to develop off the mid-Atlantic Coast Friday night, and rapidly move toward the northeast Saturday. The low will then pick up speed and race into the Maritime Saturday night.

"The low looks to come close enough to the coast to bring a period of heavy snow to the area...mainly Saturday afternoon," said the National Weather Service.

But with the storm track still somewhat uncertain, a track further northwest will bring heavy snow further inland while a track further southeast will bring less snow.

As of early Friday morning, the National Weather Service in Gray said accumulations of 6 or more inches of snow is possible, with heavy snow developing Saturday afternoon and evening. The snow should taper off and end around midnight Saturday.

Temperatures will be in the upper 20s to lower 30s, with north winds at 10 to 15 mph, and gusts up to 25 mph.
