Viola L. Fogg, obituary

ROCKLAND – Viola L. Fogg, 95, passed away Saturday, March 17, 2018.

Born in Lewiston, October 2, 1922, she was the daughter of Chester A. and Mary Keith Leach.  Her family moved to Portland and lived on Munjoy Hill, where she attended Shailer and Emerson Schools.  She graduated from Portland High School in 1940.  After graduation she attended Newton-Wellsley Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in February, 1944 as a Registered Nurse.  She worked for a time at the hospital then became school nurse at Florida Military Academy.  Viola returned to Portland in 1946. She did both general and private duty nursing at Mercy Hospital and Maine General Hospital (now Maine Medical Center). 

In 1952 she married Neal F. Fogg. They opened and operated the Marshland Restaurant for several years, before moving to the Rockland area.  She worked at the old Knox County General Hospital, as well as private duty nursing in the Rockland area.  

Mrs. Fogg and her husband owned and operated N.F. Fogg & Son Jewelers, along with their younger son Michael for 20 years and retired in 1981.  

Mrs. Fogg was predeceased by her husband in 1988, a sister Mary E. Beck in 2005, daughter-in-law Martha in 2007, and a granddaughter.  She is survived by two sons, Peter B. Fogg and his wife Cherry of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Michael F. Fogg, of Rockland; a younger sister, Anne Nation, and her husband John, of Illinois; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.

She enjoyed reading, travel, dancing and doing crafts of all kinds.  She also loved animals and always had from 1 to 3 dogs at a time, mostly dachshunds.  After the death of her last one, her beloved Ollie, she became a foster parent for mother cats and their kittens for the Pope Memorial Humane Society of Knox County.

At Mrs. Fogg’s request, there will be no funeral.  If desired, donations may be made to the Pope Memorial Humane Society of Knox County, P. O. Box 1294, Rockland, ME 04841. Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland.
