ROCKPORT — Traffic was backed up in both directions on Old County Road late Monday afternoon, Nov. 6, as Rockport firefighters, Rockport Police and Central Maine Power responded to a single-vehicle crash involving a car going into a ditch, stricking a ultility pole and knocking down the electrical wires.

The crash occurred at about 4:25 p.m., when a 2017 Honda HR-V veered off Old County Road between Lookout and Cove View Lanes, near the intersection of Route 1.

Katherine Stevens, 30, of St. George, the driver, was able to free herself from the vehicle and was uninjured. Rockport Police Officer Travis Ford confirmed that Stevens was traveling southbound on Old County Road when she ran off the road into the ditch. It was raining at the time of the accident and police reported that the road was wet. 

The airbags deployed during the crash, according to police.

Old County Road was closed in both directions beginning from Route 1 in Rockport to Route 17 in Rockland for about 90 minutes as workers in two trucks from Central Maine Power repaired the live wires, making the area safe for travel.

After the wires were secured and the pole was removed from on top of the car, Steve Laite, owner of Camden Exxon, was able to tow it out of the ditch.

Rockport Fire Chief Jason Peasley thanked and gave credit to the hardworking and dedicated crew from Central Maine Power who responded quickly to the crash scene.

“It’s been a long couple of weeks for them,” said Peasley.
