BELFAST — The cause of a fire at Ducktrap River of Maine, a seafood company located on Little River Drive, has been determined to be an errant spark from either welding or a cutting torch, according to Chief James Richards Sr., of the Belfast Fire Department.

Construction crews were working on an addition to the building when they noticed smoke, caused by a spark igniting insulation on the side of the building.

The Belfast Fire Department was alerted at 8:44 a.m. and were working to fully extinguish the fire until roughly noon.

Crews from Searsport and Morrill also assisted at the blaze.

Richards said firefighters had to enter the building to extinguish the fire, but did so quickly.

“They knocked it down in a hurry, then it was just digging out parts of the building and ceiling,” he said.

Hotspots are areas that remain hot after a fire has been put out, and can reignite, which is why certain areas are often dug-out, or closely monitored.

    There were no injuries.
