ROCKPORT — Firefighters worked fast in Rockport Thursday afternoon to extricate a woman from her Jeep, after she veered off Route 90 and rolled the car before coming to a stop in the trees.

First on scene were Rockport firefighters Allen Mitchell and Steve Laite. While Mitchell held C-spine on the woman, keeping her head and neck still, Laite got to work with the extraction equipment. Other firefighters followed immediately, and helped to cut the windshield and top of the 2007 Jeep Commander off so that the emergency medical crew from North East Mobile Health Services could tend to her injuries.

According to Rockport Police Sgt. James Moore, the driver, Lindsey Taylor, 25, of Union, was traveling eastbound on Route 90. He said that according to witnesses, she was operating at a high rate of speed and was in the opposite lane of traffic. When she returned to the right lane, the Jeep caught its wheels on a sandy knoll, went off the road, flipped three times and landed 300 feet off the embankment and in the woods.

The crash occurred between Park and Meadow streets, and Route 90 remained closed to traffic while EMS transported Taylor into an ambulance. After the ambulance departed, the road opened to one-lane traffic, and then Laite, with the help of the firefighters, righted the Jeep and hauled into on his flatbed and took it to his garage on Route 90.

Rockport has two sets of extrication equipment, one at the West Rockport Station, the other at the Main Street station. The equipment used today was a gift from the Hope Fire Department — “from our friends in Hope,” said Fire Chief Jason Peasley.

Taylor was transported to Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport, where Camden Officer Sam Butler spoke with her in the evening, said Moore.

Taylor had been driving under a suspended license. Moore said Friday morning, Aug. 11, that the crash remained under investigation and charges were pending. He declined to cite the charges until the investigation had concluded.

The story will be updated when more details become available.
