UPDATE: Buttermilk Lane residence scene of second car fire

SOUTH THOMASTON – Six months after a Buttermilk Lane resident halted his burning car near a tree in front of his house, another vehicle burst into flames on the same property. This time, fire erupted from a different vehicle on the yard side of the old house.

At 9:40 a.m., Thursday, March 8, as winds whipped the snow of a major overnight storm, South Thomaston Fire and ambulance personnel responded to the report of a car fire at 96 Buttermilk Lane.

Upon arrival, they found the vehicle fully engulfed in flames.

According to South Thomaston Fire Chief Bryan Calderwood, Dana Fogg had just returned home when his Ford Explorer became stuck in the portion of the yard near his lived-trailer. He spun the tires, and then saw smoke, which turned into fire.

The cause of fire will remain undetermined. No further investigation will be conducted, Calderwood said Tuesday, March 13.

While reporting the fire to responders, extra urgency was conveyed due to the proximity of a trailer, as well as the house itself. Neither structure was damaged, according to Calderwood.

Prior to responders’ arrival, a road crew unit plowed the road, and a passer-by with a sander sanded the area, allowing for easier working conditions for personnel.

Firefighters on scene hosed the vehicle down, sending an intermittent stream of dense smoke southward across the road.

Twelve responders tended to the incident. An officer from the Knox County Sheriff’s Office arrived on scene, but was cleared after a South Thomaston Fire unit took over traffic control.

A plow truck driver also took a turn at blocking the east side of Buttermilk Lane prior to law enforcement’s arrival.

All remaining personnel cleared the scene at 12:40 p.m., following equipment clean-up.
