LINCOLNVILLE — Nearly two months after a fatal crash on Route 52 in Lincolnville that caused one vehicle to break into two pieces and its driver to be ejected, the Waldo County Sheriff's Office this week determined that Adam Knight was speeding and his blood alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit, both factors in causing the crash.

Following the crash investigation and an accident reconstruction, Sheriff's deputies inspected Knight's unregistered Volkswagen Jetta and determined it was unsafe to drive, according to a press release. They said that Knight's license had also been revoked at the time of the crash. Knight was 31 when he was pronounced dead at the scene on March 31.

The woman that Knight crashed into that night, Priscilla Jones, 58, also of Lincolnville, has since been released from the hospital and continues to recover from the injuries she sustained when her Kia was hit as Knight's Jetta crossed into the path of her Kia in a violent and ultimately deadly collision.

The accident occurred around 7:15 p.m. near 2209 Belfast Road (Route 52), a short ways north of the Lincolnville Grange Hall. Knight was northbound when he crashed into Jones, who was traveling south.

Lincolnville Fire Chief Ben Hazen arrived on scene quickly after the accident was reported, and determined Knight had died. While one group of firefighters worked to extricate Jones from inside her car, another group combed the woods off Route 52 to determine if any passengers had been in the Volkswagen with Knight.

A section of Route 52 was closed for as many as three hours that Tuesday night while deputies reconstructed the accident. The vehicles were eventually released from the scene and towed away, and traffic allowed through again around 10:30 that night.
