Two contenders run for Rockland council seats

ROCKLAND – Three weeks have gone by since the more recent of two city council contenders submitted applications for the seats to be vacated November 7. With two seats available, fierce campaigning may not be necessary.

As of mid-morning Thursday, Sept. 14, current council member Valli Geiger and resident Gregory Mason were the only names to choose from.

Geiger, whose current three-year term ends November 7, submitted her application August 17, eight days after the August 9 opening date for submissions.

Mason submitted his paperwork a week later, August 22.

Besides Geiger’s seat, the seat currently occupied by Mayor Will Clayton also becomes vacant in November. Clayton has served two non-consecutive three-year terms and has no plans to run again.

Campaign applicants for city council, as well as the one current applicant for RSU 13 Board of Directors, Carol Bachofner, were required to provide 100-150 signatures in support of their nomination bids.

The board of director seat is also a three-year term.

Also on the ballot are the positions of Election Warden, a one-year term currently occupied by Chelsea Avirett. Avirett is seeking re-election, and is the only one thus far to bid for the seat.

Kara Woodman is seeking a second one-year term as Ward Clerk. Both Woodman and Avirett were required to submit 15-30 signatures.

Residents have until 4:30 p.m., Sept. 25 to file enter nominations with the City Clerk's Office.
