Tree falls into two houses during wind-driven April storm

ROCKLAND — Tenants of an apartment house in Rockland are staying at a hotel tonight after a large tree fell into two residences on James Street, April 4, 2024.

Rockland Fire and EMS responded to the approximate 10 a.m. call to 911, and by 11 a.m., when the fire department departed, tenants of 25 James Street began loading luggage into vehicles, and Benner Tree Service had been called to clear the tree debris.

This incident occurred during a forecasted storm that began around 11 p.m., Wednesday, April 3, beginning as rain, changing to freezing rain and snow before turning back to rain. Offshore winds battered the coastal city, shaking vehicles and sending heavy clumps of snow flying through the air alongside rain and freezing rain.

Around 9:30 a.m., accumulated snow along Thomaston’s Old County Road created difficult driving conditions that produced slide offs and utility issues. Thomaston PD closed a section of that road for a brief time. Slide offs, downed trees, and loose yet active electrical wires plagued fire departments, Public Works, law enforcement, plow drivers, and utility companies starting prior to 5 a.m., if not earlier.

A box truck in Warren got stuck in a ditch along the Cushing Road.

Island Road, in South Thomaston, was closed to due a loose, active wire, and most towns, from Washington to St. George were out dealing with one problem or another.

No injuries have been reported anywhere.
