ROCKLAND — On Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 23 and 24, the Apprenticeshop will host a workshop on how to build competition-ready wooden toboggans. Teams of participants will come away from the weekend with a beautifully crafted sled, ready for the snowiest months of the year and spec-built just in time for the U.S. National Toboggan Championships at the Camden Snow Bowl Feb. 5-7.

Under the tutelage of Apprenticeshop instructors, this course offers the unique opportunity to learn basic woodworking skills that are crucial to boatbuilding and toboggan building as both use similar techniques and skills. Teams of up to four participants will steam bend wood strips and fasten the pieces together using copper rivets. Knot work for the rope handle will finish off the sled.

When the workshop is complete, participants will leave with new skills and a more broad understanding of general woodworking. Past participants say that they've had years of wintertime enjoyment with toboggans built in the course. This is a weekend-long workshop Jan. 23 and 24 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. All tools and materials are provided. The workshop is limited to four teams of up to four persons per team. Cost is $325 per team plus a $75 materials fee. Space is limited and this popular class fills fast. Great for families, youth groups, and friends preparing to shoot the chute at the Snow Bowl this winter and in years to come.
