CAMDEN — Three competitors showed up Sunday morning for the annual remote control sailboat racing event, a long-standing tradition of the Camden Windjammer Festival.

Anyone can sign up to compete, and the course involves sailing out, around a marker and back. The fastest one to complete the course wins, and there are multiple heats to ensure everyone gets a chance to do their best during the quick track out and back with unpredictable winds.

Irvington Maxwell was captain of Yellow Missile, a 6.6-foot 15 pound model sailboat. His was the largest by far, but wasn’t always the fastest out and back during each heat of the races to win the right to put a name on the Capt. Major Chadwick Memorial Trophy.

Dave Johnson’s boat, Blue, was a homemade model sailboat, based on a 1-meter design. It weighed about 8 pounds.

Rounding out the field was Landis Gabel and his 30-inch-long sailboat, Little Eider.

Sunday’s RC race in front of the town docks is always a fun sight, since the wind can be finicky and there is occasional large boat traffic to contend with.

All in all, it was a blast, said Camden Harbormaster Steve Pixley. But exactly who won the most heats, Pixley isn’t sure yet but we will update this story when that information is available.
