TENANTS HARBOR — St. George Sailing is gearing up for its sixteenth season of sailing instruction this summer. Sailing is taught to children nine and up from floats off Blueberry Cove Camp on Harts Neck. The sailors come for a half day over two weeks, with beginners attending in the morning and more advanced sailors in the afternoon. Three sessions are scheduled, starting on July 11, July 25, and August 8. In the interest of keeping sailing affordable, there is a reduced rate for residents of St. George and the surrounding towns of Thomaston, South Thomaston, Cushing, and Spruce Head. There are also scholarships available for St. George residents.

Participants learn the skills needed to rig and sail a small boat in a safe and fun environment. As they advance, they learn the basics of sailboat racing, a sport that is growing in popularity in the Midcoast. The fleet includes eight small Hunter 90s, which are self-righting nine-foot dinghies, four 420's, and three larger daysailers. The program's instructors are accomplished sailors with US Sailing Level One Certification.

St. George Sailing is run by the St. George Community Sailing Foundation, a community supported nonprofit organization founded in 2001. St. George Sailing has a cooperative relationship with the UMaine 4H Camp and Learning Center at Blueberry Cove and operates from the camp's shorefront. Registration information can be found on the website at stgeorgesail.org, or by calling (207) 372-8174.
