Studded snow tires lead to multiple charges

BELFAST — A Prospect man is facing multiple charges following a traffic stop on Swan Lake Avenue June 1.

Phillip M. Norris, 25, was pulled over around 10:15 p.m., after Belfast Police noticed the vehicle he was driving had out of season studded snow tires and purple license plate lights, according to Officer Benjamin Kolko.

While studded snow tires must be removed by May 1, blue-toned plate lights are always prohibited in Maine unless being used by law enforcement.

Upon making contact with Norris, Kolko became suspicious that he was impaired by something other than alcohol.

After asking Norris to step out of the vehicle for standard field sobriety tests, it was discovered that his license was currently under suspension and the plates he was using did not belong to the vehicle.

A subsequent pat down revealed heroin on Norris’ person, and more was located in his vehicle, along with drug paraphernalia.

Norris was arrested and charged with operating under the influence, operating after suspension, unlawful possession of schedule W drugs, sale and use of drug paraphernalia, and attaching false plates.

Norris is scheduled to appear in Belfast Unified Criminal Court Aug. 1.
