ROCKLAND – The Knox County grand jury handed down 23 indictments against nine defendants June 5. An indictment does not imply guilt.

Brian Keith Bolyard, 21, of Lebanon, was indicted for assaulting another man on May 18, 2016, in Warren.

Brenda Carty, 53, of Owls Head, was indicted for felony theft for allegedly stealing money from the class of 2018 at Oceanside High School. She was charged November 9, 2016, by the Rockland Police Department Criminal Investigations Division. She is accused of embezzling more than $8,000 from the junior class' bank account. According to the police affidavit filed by Detective Joel Neal, parents of the 2018 graduating class decided to begin raising money for their children in October 2013 to offset costs of graduating class events. The only signature on the account was Carty. Class students and parents had participated in numerous fundraising events over the years, including craft fairs, selling Yankee candles and basketball concessions. When parents began to question Carty about the account balance, she told them there was only $4,800 in the account, police said. The parents believed there should be much more than that in the account. Subpoenaed bank records showed numerous ATM withdrawals not connected to the Class of 2018 and numerous purchases, said police.

Carl B. Gross, 31, of Vinalhaven, was indicted for felony reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, terrorizing and operating a watercraft to endanger for an incident on Nov. 30, 2016, in Vinalhaven. He allegedly used his lobster boat to threaten two men.

Raymond Porter, 39, of Searsmont, was indicted for aggravated criminal mischief and criminal trespass April 13 in Rockport. According to the affidavit filed by Rockport Police, a homeowner residing on Old County Road reported that his garage was broken into and the building and an antique car were vandalized. Damages in the garage included broken windows, a smashed electrical fuse box and holes punched through a door. A table was also thrown through a back window. The property owner also reported damage to a Ford Model T 1920s style truck, belonging to the Samoset Resort, that was being stored in the garage. The truck is one of the few remaining items from the fire at the Samoset in 1972, according to the affidavit.

Seth Sargent, 36, of Portland, was indicted for assault on a corrections officer at Knox County Jail and violation of a condition of release May 28 in Rockland.

Bruce S. Sidelinger, 43, of Rockland, was indicted for criminal threatening and terrorizing Jan. 13 in Thomaston.

Justin A. Steeves, 31, of Rockland, was indicted for criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, a knife, terrorizing and criminal mischief April 17 in Rockport. Steeves was also indicted for burglary April 26 at a residence in Rockland, violation of a protective order, and violation of a condition of release.

Zachary J. Thomas, 32, of Lincolnville, was indicted for one count of burglary and four counts of theft at Megunticook Market in Camden. The thefts are alleged to have occurred Nov. 16, Nov. 28, Dec. 1 and Dec. 9, 2016, at the market. Thomas allegedly stole approximately $3,000 during a two-week period in December, said Camden Police Detective Curt Andrick. According to the police affidavit filed in Knox County Unified Court, Thomas had previously been employed by the market and had knowledge of the store, including where cash was secured. His most recent employment was painting and doing repairs after the store was closed.
