Snow and wind this afternoon, evening... into Tuesday

Mon, 02/08/2016 - 12:30pm

GRAY — More snow is headed for the Midcoast, and the National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory in effect through Tuesday at noon. The snow will begin falling this afternoon, and the north wind will intensify.

The winter weather message calls for a "long duration snowfall expected Monday into Tuesday," according to the National Weather Service. The 10:30 a.m. forecast, Feb. 8, is below.

Low pressure passing by offshore is expected to combine with an upper level low moving in from the west to bring widespread snow to New England.

While parts of Massachusetts could see more than at foot of snow, Midcoast Maine should see around 4 to 7 inches, accumulating over 24 hours. Snow will be moderate for most areas, with heavier amounts possible near the coast.

The snow is expected to begin later this afternoon and continue into Tuesday morning. Some light snow could linger into Tuesday afternoon, but much of the accumulation will be over by midday Tuesday.

Winds will be north, 10-20 mph, with gusts up to 35 mph. Strong winds will cause blowing and drifting snow, and could lead to low visibility in spots, according to the NWS.

Temperatures will be in the teens.
