SEARSPORT — A Massachusetts couple was injured Tuesday morning after the motorcycle they were riding blew its rear tire July 28.

Wayne and Mary Connolly, of Lowell, Mass., were traveling west on Main Street shortly after crossing into Searsport when the accident occurred just before 10 a.m.

“The passenger said she heard the tire pop,” said Chief Dick LaHaye, of the Searsport Police Department.

The blown tired caused the bike to go off the side of the road toward a guardrail, where it ultimately came to rest.

Mary Connolly, 54, suffered a broken wrist and ankle, in addition to abrasions. Wayne Connolly, 58, suffered a broken collarbone and ribs, in addition to other abrasions, said Chief LaHaye.

Speed is not considered to be a factor in the accident.

“The speed limit is 55 mph, and I think they were well under that, which led to a less serious accident,” LaHaye said.

Mary and Wayne Connolly, who were both wearing helmets, were each transported to Waldo County General Hospital by Searsport Ambulance.

Searsport Police were assisted on scene by the Searsport Fire Department and Belfast Police Department.
