BELFAST — A Searsport man was arrested after operating under the influence and crashing his vehicle Sept. 17, for the second time in less than four weeks.

Jason Kilby, 36, was charged with operating under the influence and violating conditions of release after failing to navigate a sweeping left turn on High Street, near Belfast’s Rail Trail entrance, said Belfast Police.

Kilby’s September 17 incident came to the attention of Belfast Police around 2:30 p.m., after a concerned citizen reported the wreck. When officers arrived on scene they found Kilby still inside the vehicle, according to Belfast Police Sergeant John Gibbs.

Gibbs said it appears that Kilby’s vehicle first struck a guard rail before bouncing off the roadside to the right, ultimately striking a tree.

Kilby reportedly told responding officers that he crashed after attempting to avoid a person in the roadway, but people in the Rail Trail parking lot who witnessed the incident said they did not observe anyone in the roadway at the time of the crash.

The GMC truck Kilby was operating was towed from the scene due to disabling damage.

Kilby was previously arrested Aug. 26, after crashing his vehicle on Rolerson Road while operating under the influence. He was charged with operating under the influence, operating after suspension, leaving the scene of a property damage accident, and violating conditions of release as a result of that crash.
