Three competing for two open seats on Board of Selectmen

Searsport to hold elections Tuesday in advance of annual town meeting

    SEARSPORT - Voters will pick two selectmen from a field of three and decide several other municipal positions in a regular municipal elections, Tuesday, March 3. Other business will be taken up this Saturday, March 7, at the annual town meeting.

    Candidates for the Board of Selectmen include Aaron Fethke, Doug Norman and Walter Sarnacki. The position carries a three-year term.

    Fethke has served multiple terms and is currently chairman of the board. He is seeking re-election. Norman is former selectman looking to return to the board. He served two terms previously before losing his seat to John Merrithew in a closely contested race last March.

    Selectman Joe Perry is not seeking re-election. He served five terms on the board spanning 15 years.

    Voters will also pick members for the town’s budget advisory committee and a representative to the Regional School Unit 20 board of directors.

    There are eight candidates for nine open positions on the budget committee. For the RSU 20 board, chairman Anthony Bagley is running unopposed to for re-election. The departure in July of six towns that voted to withdraw from the district will reduce the board’s jurisdiction to two towns, Searsport and Stockton Springs. The school board post carries a three-year term.

    Voting on Tuesday will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Public Safety Building, 3 Union Street.

    The annual town meeting will be held at 9 a.m., Saturday, March 7, at Searsport District High School, 24 Mortland Road.
