For a small school with no track, Boothbay Region High School fields an impressive outdoor track and field team. This year’s roster boasts 49 athletes, 33 of them male.

Last year, the Seahawks tasted success at both the Mountain Valley Conference and state championships, and they are gearing up for more this season. Aiding them in that venture are two, new, young and talented coaches, whose skills will add depth and breadth to the program.

Coach Nick Scott said he is excited to have football coach Bryan Dionne and Josh Higgins joining him, and long-time volunteer Dick Morrison this season.

“The addition of Bryan and Josh as coaches has been fantastic,” Scott said. “Bryan has so many talents that he brings to the table. A great head coach in the fall, who has done an amazing job bringing back the football program, he knows how to train kids for functional strength.”

“Josh brings a tremendous amount of talent to the team. He was a standout thrower at Traip Academy and then threw at UMO, where he was a varsity letter man,” Scott said.

Dionne and Higgins not only round out the track program’s skill set, but they, like Scott and Morrison, also have a great rapport with the kids.

The team roster is none too shabby either.

Leading the girls program is junior Morgan Crocker, last year’s girls team MVP, who excels in hurdles and jumps. Crocker rocked the MVC championships last year, where she took first in the 100m hurdles, third at 300m hurdles, second in long jump and third in triple jump.

Distance runners, Sophia Thayer, and Hannah Morley can also be expected to deliver this season. At last year’s MVCs, Thayer won the 1600m event and Morley, the school’s 3200m record holder, placed 2nd in both the 1600m and 3200m. Thayer placed 7th and Morley 9th at the 3200m state championship meet.

Nell Anthony, who will be back throwing things this year, looks stronger than ever this season. Anthony placed 2nd at javelin at the MVCs last year and 4th at the state championship.

On the boys side, the top returners are fast runners and all seniors.

Benn Scully and Robert Campbell, who have had tremendous success this year in both cross country and Nordic, end their aerobic trilogy with track. Scully, last year’s MVP, placed 2nd in the 800m and 6th in the 3200m at MVCs and 7th in both events at the state championship last year. Campbell, who finished in the top ten at the state cross country meet this fall, is expected to translate that success to long distance events this season. Campbell placed 8th at MVCs and 12th in the 3200m at the state championship last year.

In a team dominated by long distance runners, sprinter Jason Maddocks delivers the short distance speed. Maddocks was 4th last year in the 100m at MVCs and returns as the team’s lead sprinter. Scott said Maddocks also looks to be the top newcomer in long jump.

After sitting out fall and winter coaching duties, Scott is glad to be back doing what he loves.

“This is an extremely exciting year for track and field for BRHS,” Scott said. “The boys and girls teams are two of the strongest and most well-rounded teams that we have fielded in over the last eight years that I’ve been part of the program. I am super excited to be coaching again and am eagerly awaiting Friday’s meet at Camden.”

The Seahawks outdoor track season kicks off at Camden Hills Regional High School on Friday, April 18 at 3:30 p.m, where they will face Belfast, Camden, Erskine, Medomak and Oceanside.
