ROCKPORT — An early evening rollover on Route 17 in Rockport resulted in secondary crash involving two other cars, and one person being transported to Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport, June 29.

According to Rockport Police Officer Dana Smith, Doreen Robbins, 55, Appleton, fell asleep at the wheel of her sedan as she was heading east along Route 17 toward Rockland at approximately 5:45 p.m.

Her car veered into the ditch at the intersection of Mirror Lake Lane, then was airborne, before it nosedived and then flipped onto its roof.

As the traffic along Route 17 came to a screeching halt, a car in the westbound lane slammed into the back of another, causing the second crash.

North East Mobile Health Services and 16 firefighters from the Rockport Fire Department responded to the scene, just opposite the entrance to the Maine Water facility at the east end of Mirror Lake.

Smith said the second crash occurred as Sean Stephens, 36, of Palermo, slowed his 2007 Honda Civic following the rollover of Robbins’ car. As he slowed, a 2011 Ford Expedition SUV, operated by Kathy Metcalfe, 31, of Union, slammed into the back of his Civic.

“That’s why I had three vehicles for one rollover,” said Smith.

Both Stephens and Metcalfe were uninjured. Robbins remained at Pen Bay Medical Center into the evening, being treated for lacerations and pain, said Smith.
