ROCKPORT — Police arrested Donald Keating, 55, of Owls Head tonight and charged him with a robbery that occurred earlier in the afternoon at the Kennebec Pharmacy in Rockport.

Rockport Police Chief Mark Kelley said at 9:30 p.m., Sept. 9, that Keating had been transported to Knox County Jail after police located him at home.

Keating allegedly entered the Rockport pharmacy, which is across the street from the entrance to Pen Bay Medical Center on Route 1, late this afternoon and demanded narcotics.

His request was met and then, “he fled,” said Kelley. “No weapon was displayed.”

At one point he did have a Hannaford’s shopping bag over his head, Kelley said.

Keating apparently walked out the pharmacy door, turned left, and passed through a short patch of woods to a parking lot at Oakland Commons, an office complex where doctors’ offices are located, police said. There, he got into a green Saab station wagon and drove away.

Rockport police responded to the scene at 4:35 p.m., along with Maine Drug Enforcement agents, Rockland police and Knox County Sheriff’s Office.

As police interviewed the eight employees working at the pharmacy, Rockland detectives assisted by producing a photo line-up for the witnesses.

That, along with other information, led them to pursue Keating, said Kelley.

“We had good information,” he said.

When police tracked Keating to his home, Kelley said he admitted to the crime.

Kelley declined to specify how much narcotics was obtained, only to say, “a lot.”

Rockport’s police chief credits Rockland detectives for helping solve the crime; in particular, Chris Young and Russ Thompson.

“It was a good, cooperative effort,” Kelley said.
