ROCKPORT — The Rockport Fire Department has promoted veteran firefighter David Leighton to the rank of lieutenant. The position was vacated when John Wickenden was promoted to Assistant Fire Chief.

Leighton joined the fire department in 1987 while he was in high school. His father, Gary, served as assistant and deputy chief from 1982 to 1990. Firefighting continues to be a dedication with the Leighton family. Leighton's son, Tyler, is also a Rockport firefighter and the third generation to serve Rockport. His daughter, Samantha, is planning to join the department in June as a junior firefighter after she turns 16.

"David is a reliable and multi-talented member of our department and we count on him as our chief mechanic and experienced pump operator,” said Fire Chief Jason Peasley. “He is a very knowledgeable and committed firefighter. Overall, he has the ability to do everything and deserves the promotion.”

Looking back over his career, Leighton said his most notable call was in 2008 for a mutual aid fire in Camden at the construction site of the Grand Harbour Inn.

Leighton said it is important for the community to have a strong fire department.

"If my house was on fire or if I or any of my family members were in an accident, I would sure want someone to respond right away," he said.

Leighton is a supervisor with Maritime Energy in Rockland and also assists Rockport Public Works with snow plowing. He is an avid supporter of 4-H and Aldermere Farm in Rockport.
