To be unearthed in 25 years

Rockport about ready to bury its time capsule

Fri, 09/23/2016 - 8:30am

ROCKPORT — Last call for including photos, memorabilia, letters, or anything else equally imaginative in the Rockport Time Capsule, which will sit under a special hand-hewn granite slab outside the Rockport Town Office, until 2041, when the town marks its 150th anniversary.

The time capsule is being buryied in commemoration of the Rockport 125th celebration, marking its separation from the Town of Camden 125 years ago.

In 2016, Rockport held ceremonies, parties, a parade, ball, bridge dinner and more events to celebrate itself as a town, honoring its roots and sense of place. The last bit of Rockport’s Qausquicentennial (125th) business is the time capsule.

Items are still being collected for the Rockport Time Capsule but the burial date of Oct. 14 is closing in.

A special granite stone, donated by Joshua Carle and Rockport Granite, will be erected on the Town Office property. The granite comes from the Mystic Mountain vein, an ancient line of granite that runs along the Maine coastline.

Bob Williams, of Brooks Monuments, stenciled the lettering for the 125th granite, and donated his time for the effort.

Norman Casas, donated the use of his sand blasting equipment, as well as materials and technical expertise. Owen Casas polished the stone, and carved the words into it.

A ceremony will be held, tentatively for Oct. 14 for the time capsule burial.

To add your items (no larger than a legal-size envelope or bulkier than 2-inches-wide, please! Thumb drives, DVDs, letters are ideal), take them to the Rockport Town Office front desk. Questions? Call 236-9648.
