ROCKLAND – Once completed, the new Midcoast School of Technology building in Rockland will use solar panels for hot water along with geothermal heating and cooling, according to the Planning Board’s June 6 application findings.

The planning board has approved the application and will give it’s official signature at the Tuesday, Aug. 15 planning board meeting.

This educational facility educates career- and technical-bound high school students from six area towns.

The new 89,400 sq facility will be located next to the existing building at 1 Main Street. When the new facility is ready for use, the old structure will be demolished.

Estimated completion date for the project is stated as September 2019, with a $21,500,000 estimated cost.

The first floor of the new two-story structure will take up 57,218 sq ft – 218 sq ft larger than the entire existing building. The second floor will add another 33,882 sq ft.

Also on the list are sprinklers, dust collectors, a new sidewalk along the property at Main Street, 145 regular parking spaces, 10 handicap parking spots, and exterior shielded downlights which will either be dimmed or turned off after 10 p.m.
