ROCKLAND — Demolition of the Fireproof Garage on Winter Street is scheduled to begin on Monday, Sept. 8.

This is the building located directly behind Atlantic Baking Company, and is the site of the future home of the Center for Maine Contemporary Art.

The demolition process is expected to take up to one full week. During the demolition phase, Winter Street will be reduced to one way traffic.

Excavation for the new foundation is tentatively scheduled for the month of October. The construction phase is expected to last 14-16 months, with an anticipated grand opening in the spring of 2016.

Simultaneous with, but not directly related to the CMCA construction phase noted above, the City of Rockland is planning to perform underground work on Winter Street to correct the waste water and storm water drainage in that area.

The City of Rockland and CMCA have expressed sincere interest in keeping disruptions and inconvenience to a minimum during this process.

The city drainage work is a critically important project, according to Gordon Page, Sr., executive director of Rockland Main Street, Inc.  Page stated in his press release: “CMCA will be a welcome addition to downtown Rockland, but as the saying goes, you need to break a few eggs to make an omelet!”
