OWLS HEAD — Robert Wayne Springer Salo, 59, died unexpectedly April 20, 2015, at his home, after a period of declining health.

Born in Rockland on June 2, 1955, he was the son of Eugene C. and Arline M. Jenkins Springer. After his mother's death when Robert was 2 ½ years old, he was adopted by his aunt and uncle, Arvo and Nettie Salo.

His school years began in South Thomaston and Owls Head until moving in 1963 with his parents to Florida. He attended schools in Ft. Lauderdale and Plantation, Fla., and after returning to Rockport with his parents, graduated from Camden–Rockport High School in 1973. That fall, Robert entered the United States Air Force and he later served in the U. S. Navy.

Periodically, Robert worked with his father in the building trade, until moving to Connecticut.

More recently, he was pleased to earn certification as a hospice care attendant.

An accomplished fine woodworker, Robert enjoyed making beautiful montage pictures and furniture. He found great pleasure presenting many of these pieces to friends, family and his church.

Robert enjoyed a close friendship with fellow church member Freda Plumley, of Augusta.

Robert was a member of the Augusta Church of Christ, where he was active in the missions program, particularly helping that church’s outreach to Ethiopia.

In addition to his parents, Arvo and Nettie Salo of Owls Head, Robert is survived by his birth father, Eugene C. Springer of Buxton; his brother, Eugene C. Wood of California; many aunts, uncles and extended family.

A graveside service will be held Thursday, May 7 at 11 a.m. at Seaview Cemetery on Russell Avenue in Rockport. The Rev. Phil Stratton of Augusta Church of Christ will officiate. A reception will follow at the Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home Reception Center, 104 Limerock St. in Rockland.
