Riley School children bake pies for community Thanksgiving Dinner in Rockland

Tue, 11/22/2016 - 8:30pm

The Riley School in Glen Cove, Rockport, was filled with the sound of busy bakers and aromas of chopped apples Nov. 22 as students made 16 apple and pumpkin pies for the Community Thanksgiving Dinner being served at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, in Rockland.

At Riley, cooking for the community has been a long-standing Thanksgiving tradition. The children prepared the pies in collaboration, within their Reflection groups. Reflection groups meet daily throughout the year to share aspects of their day, and to work together on special projects such as this all-school baking day, and their mid-winter Special Interest Projects. Riley families contributed to purchase ingredients, and the faculty orchestrated the peeling, coring, chopping, piecrust making, and baking.

This is Riley’s first year donating to St. Peter’s. Last year, approximately 300 people were served at St. Peter’s, and 100 meals were delivered. The pies will be delivered to St. Peter’s on Wednesday morning by Rebecca Clapp, Head of School.

At the Riley School, children learn by doing, questioning, and discovering within small classes and individualized programs. Accredited by the New England Association of School and Colleges and the Maine State Department of Education, The Riley School enrolls children ages 4-14, and starting at 18 months for the Wade Acres toddler program throughout the mid-coast region.  For more information visit rileyschool.org or call the office 207-594-6405 to schedule a visit.
