MATINICUS — On the afternoon of June 26, 2015, Richard C. “Rick” Kohls Jr. passed away at his home on Matinicus Island. Rick was 56 years old.

Rick was born in Manchester, N.H., on May 1, 1959. He was the second child, and the only son of Richard Clement Sr. and Bertha Olga Palanky Kohls.

Rick grew up in Dunbarton, N.H. He was an accomplished equestrian and enjoyed snow skiing. He attended Derryfield School in Manchester, N.H., and the University of Rhode Island.

Rick spent his summers on Matinicus Island from the time he was 9 years old through college. He worked as a sternman and loved fishing the waters. Rick fell in love with the Island, its people and its culture. It is there that Rick settled after college and worked as a fisherman. He was an avid reader, and had a love for the outdoors. He especially loved his time spent at the Riley family hunting camp. Rick had a great love of sports and especially enjoyed his “Dukies.”

Rick was preceded in death by his mother, Bertha Kohls; his father, Richard Kohls; and his former wife, Susan Perkins Kohls-Bartlett.

Rick is survived by his sons, Evan Ryan Kohls of Searsport, Jeremy Young, and Mike Young and his wife, Elizabeth, all of Rockland; and two sisters, Karen Beth Kohls of Montgomery, Ala., and Amy Elizabeth Kohls of Starkville, Miss.

A celebration of Rick's life will be announced at a later date.
