SEARSMONT — Searsmont’s Quantabacook Lake has been a favorite spot of many to go bass fishing, more-so the favorite of fisher John Strassenreiter.

”I have been fishing on Quantabacook since the 1950’s when I would spend summers here at Camp Wah Nah Gee Sha operated by my parents,” said Strassenreiter. “[I] hardly ever caught any bass because the lake was fished-out back in the 1930’s!”

However, after the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife added largemouth bass in the early 1960’s, Strassenreiter began to have great fishing success.

“In 1978, I caught the biggest bass ever in this lake, 7 ½ [pounds] that won the Field and Stream contest that year,” stated Strassenreiter.

After 37 more years of fishing Quantabacook, Strassenreiter made history again.

On Sept. 10, he caught what he, as President of the Quantabacook Lake Association, believes is the lake’s biggest bass — an 8 ¼ pound 24 inch long bass.

“Well, this year I finally caught a fish that topped [the 1978] one,” he said.
