BELFAST — Law enforcement is warning Waldo County residents about a scam reportedly circulating the area as recently as today, according to a media report from the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office.

The group, going by the name ‘Money Grants,’ contacts potential victims via text, offering between $20,000 - $500,000 in grant money, should they choose to participate.

Once a victim is approved for the grant, they are told they must pay varying administrative fees before the funds can be awarded.

The fees, which are based on the size of the grant chosen by the respective victim, range from $2,000 for an $80,000 grant, up to $10,000 for the $500,000 maximum amount.

The only way to contact Money Grants is via text message.

Law enforcement is reminding citizens not to give out any personal information over the phone, or by text.

Waldo County Sheriff’s detectives are looking for any additional information about the group.
