Penobscot Bay Leadership Collaborative invites participants for Summer 2018

Thu, 04/05/2018 - 2:00pm

After a pilot boys-only program in 2017, the Apprenticeshop, Hurricane Island Outward Bound School and Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership are offering collaborative courses this summer for girls and boys.

This year’s program includes elements from the three organizations, with sailing, craftsmanship, wilderness travel, team building, leadership and STEM as focus areas. There are two programs offered for a total of 20 students. A girls’ program will run June 25 to July 8, and a boys’ program will run July 16-29.

For more information about the program, visit hurricaneisland.net/pblc.

Eight out of the 20 slots on course are reserved for merit-based scholarships, which are to be recommended to the program through local schools. Each of the following schools has at least one full scholarship of $2,500: St. George School, Oceanside, Camden Rockport Middle School, Hope Elementary School, Appleton Village School, Medomak Middle School, Edna Drinkwater Elementary, and Lincolnville Central School.

The merit-based scholarship is offered to a male or female student who has both a financial need and whom the school feels will benefit academically from participating in the course. Schools will determine which students are to be selected for this scholarship.

Students from the Midcoast, which is defined for this program as Waldoboro to Northport, can sign up directly as open enrollment students at hurricaneisland.net/pblc. Additional financial aid is also available, outside of the scholarships described above.

Penobscot Bay Leadership Collaborative programs are designed to foster the development of character and inspire curiosity for science and craftsmanship for Midcoast Maine youth. Through hands on engagement in seamanship, science and sailing, the organizations aim to encourage innovation, curiosity and develop leadership that will have a lasting impact in our local communities.
