Pen Bay Sailing League teams move fast under strong fall breeze

The Fall winds had to change. After two light-air Pen Bay Sailing League regattas in September and early October the winds finally came up for the final fall regatta on Mount Desert Island.

Sailing under sunny skies, a strong current and a shifty but steady 10-15 mph breeze, six high school teams from MDI, Lincoln Academy, George Stevens Academy, Islesboro, Camden Hills, Oceanside and Rockland Community Sailing competed on host MDI’s home race course.

The stronger breeze was to the liking of the Oceanside and Rockland Community Sailing team as they swept both the A and B Divisions by taking four of six races in B Division and just edging Lincoln Academy by a point in the A Division.

Top boat in A Division was sailed by Oceanside and RCS’s Emmett Dorr and Raya Leuhman with top honors in B Division going to Henri Weymouth and Sarah Vallance.

Other local sailors included Camden Hills’ Charlie Conover, Ava Tobias and Olive Conover, Scarlett Labbe-Watson and Sophia Skrivanich from RCS and Islesboro’s Alma Bewsher and Rosie Brimley.

After all three fall Pen Bay Sailing League regattas were tallied, Lincoln Academy was able to secure top league honors followed closely by Oceanside and RCS in second with Camden Hills a point back in third.
