ROCKLAND - Rockland Police and EMS have identified the name of the victim killed in Friday evening’s hit-and-run accident on Camden Street (Route 1).

Fire and police personnel responded to a report of a car crash involving a pedestrian on Camden Street (Route 1) in Rockland early  on the evening of Jan. 30, and learned that the driver had fled the scene, according to Rockland Sgt. Don Finnegan In a press release.

The crash occurred around 5:30 p.m., near Pizza Hut, and the pedestrian, later identified as 35-year-old Daniel Cormier of Rockland and Owls Head, was taken to Pen Bay Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Two people walking with Cormier were not injured, according to Police Chief Bruce Boucher.

Boucher said that it was raining at the time of the crash, and that while there was no sidewalk on the side of Route 1 that Cormier and the two others were walking on, evidence indicates he had exited a building on that side of the road in the area where he was struck. There was a sidewalk on the opposite side of the road, and it was plowed, but it is not clear if Cormier was planning to cross and walk on that side of the road.

A large portion of Route 1 was closed to thru traffic on either side of where the crash occurred for several hours Friday night, and during their work, police identified 40-year-old Jeremy Stone of Rockport as the driver of the vehicle that killed Cormier. He was located and arrested at a residence in Rockland, according to Boucher.

Stone was has been charged with operating under the influence, class B, and leaving the scene of an accident involving death, class C. Stone also had two outstanding warrants, and remains held at Knox County Jail on $11,000 cash bail. He was due to appear in court for his arraignment Monday afternoon, but weather closed the courts in Rockland early and the hearing is pending rescheduling.

Boucher was not inclined to talk about details of the investigation, including seizure of evidence, but he did confirm that a Jeep Cherokee has been seized and is being processed in relation to the investigation.

Rockland Police were assisted in their investigation by Rockport Police and Maine State Police. Finnegan said that additional charges are pending.
