Panthers 16U claims state softball championship

BREWER — Over the weekend, the Panthers 16U softball team, comprised of players from Medomak Valley High School, won the Maine USA/ASA state softball championship in Brewer and went 4-0 in tournament action. 

Class A teams, comprised of travel ball squads, included the Lady Hurricanes, Maine Explosion, Maine Revere, Screaming Eagles and Team Attack. 

Class B teams, comprised of school-based teams, included the Eddies, Old Town and Bangor, in addition to the Panthers. 

Head Coach Richard Vannah stated: “I'm very proud of these girls. We were behind in all four games and they fought hard every step of the way to win it. It says a lot about their character."

Comprising the Panthers’ roster were Maddy White, Cassie Smeltzer, Addie Jameson, Gabby Depatsy, Hallie Kunesh, Josie Jameson, Lydia Simmons, Abby Nelson, Aubrey Schaeffer, Sadie Cohen, Kayla Donlin, Meylayna Benner, Eliza Nelson, Cheyanne Nash and Natalie Stewart. Vannah was assisted by Kyle Santheson. 

The team’s first three contests ended in the sixth inning, instead of the seventh, due to time limits. 

Panthers 8, Team Attack 4 (July 8) 

Team Attack plated a run in the first and three in the sixth while the Panthers plated two in the second and third, one in the fourth and fifth and two in the sixth. 

Addie Jameson worked the pitcher’s circle going six innings and only allowing four hits, four runs and five walks while fanning 10. 

At the plate for the Panthers: Nelson (run), Addie Jameson (single, two runs), DePatsy (two singles, run), Kunesh (two singles, double, three runs), Josie Jameson (two singles, double), Cohen (single, double) and White (single, run). 

Panthers 5, Bangor 4 (July 8) 

The Panthers plated one run in each the second through sixth innings while Bangor plated one in the first and third and two in the fifth. 

DePatsy worked the pitcher’s circle going six innings while allowing four hits, four runs and four walks while striking out eight. 

At the plate for the Panthers: White (two singles), Smeltzer (two singles, two runs), DePatsy (single), Kunesh (single), Josie Jameson (single, run) and Nelson (single, run, home run). 

Panthers 7, Maine Explosion 5 (July 9) 

The Panthers plated one in the first and six in the sixth inning while Maine Explosion plated one in the first and third in addition to three in the sixth. 

Addie Jameson worked the pitcher’s circle going six innings while allowing nine hits, five runs and three walks while striking out six. 

At the plate for the Panthers: White (single, run), Smeltzer (single, run), Addie Jameson (single, double, run), DePatsy (single), Kunesh (single, run), Josie Jameson (run) and Nelson (run). 

Panthers 5, Maine Explosion 3 (July 9 - Championship) 

The Panthers plated one in the fourth and four in the sixth while Maine explosion plated two in the second and one in the third. 

Addie Jameson (four innings, three hits, seven strikeouts, three walks) and DePatsy (two innings, six hits) worked the pitcher’s circle. 

At the plate for the Panthers: Smeltzer (single), DePatsy (run), Kunesh (single, run), Josie Jameson (run), Simmons (double, run), Nelson (single, run) and Donlin (single),
