Orion Krause arraigned on murder charges

    WOBURN, MASS. — Orion Krause, 23, of Rockport was arraigned April 11 in Middlesex Superior Court in Woburn, Mass., on four counts of murder. His attorney, according to the Lowell Sun, said he will “likely pursue an insanity defense.”

    Krause had been at Bridgewater State Hospital, where he had undergone a mental health assessment last fall, results of which concluded that he is competent to stand trial on four counts of murder in connection with the Friday, September 8, 2017 quadruple homicide on Common Street in Groton, Massachusetts. The victims were his mother, Elizabeth Lackey Krause, 60, his grandparents Frank Danby Lackey III , 89, and Elizabeth Lackey, 86, and their home healthcare worker, Bertha Parker, 68. 

    “For the first time in any of his court appearances, Krause showed emotion and appeared to choke up as he answered ‘not guilty’ to an indictment alleging he killed his mother,” the Lowell Sun reported.

    District Attorney Marian Ryan has confirmed that Orion Krause, 23, of Rockport, was indicted by a Middlesex Superior Court Grand Jury on March 29, 2018 on four counts of murder. He will be arraigned on April 11, at 9 a.m. in Middlesex Superior Court, in Woburn. 

    The charges are allegations and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty, according to a news release from the Middlesex, Mass., District Attorney. The prosecutors assigned to this case are Assistant District Attorneys Thomas Brant and Daniel Harren.

    Krause, of Rockport, had been at Bridgewater State Hospital, where he had undergone a mental health assessment last fall, results of which concluded that he is competent to stand trial.

    Krause, 22, of Rockport, was arraigned in Ayer District Court Sept. 11 on four counts of murder in connection with the Friday, September 8, quadruple homicide on Common Street in Groton, Massachusetts. The victims were his mother, Elizabeth Lackey Krause, 60, his grandparents Frank Danby Lackey III , 89, and Elizabeth Lackey, 86, and their home healthcare worker, Bertha Parker, 68.
