CAMDEN — This exhibition of Libby Wohler's work at The Camden Public Library is the first since 2003. It has been mounted by her daughter, Christina, of Camden. Christina will host an opening reception at the library on Sunday, January 7 at 2:00 pm. The artwork will remain on display for the month of January.

Libby Wohler moved to Cushing Maine from Akron, Ohio with her husband Leonard in 1975. Although she had painted before moving to Maine, the beauty she found here stimulated an explosion of creativity that lasted until a few years before her death from Alzheimer's in 2009.

Libby's primary medium was oil on canvas and paper. The work on paper often took the form of monotypes – one of a kind prints created by painting on glass and transferring the image to paper. Sometimes she would make variations on these prints by repainting on the glass or adding paint to the print afterward.

Libby's primary focus was on land and sea themes although she also painted interiors, initially inspired by the houses in which she stayed during annual trips to Maine's outer islands, mostly Criehaven. Her passion for the Maine landscape is particularly palpable in her monotypes which have an immediacy and freshness not always present in the more controlled medium of oil on canvas, which can be continually reworked. In the monotypes, it is especially possible to see her spiritual connection to Maine's magnificent and varied landscapes and seascapes – things that gave her great joy.

Libby exhibited widely in Maine during her creative years including at the Caldbeck Gallery, The Courier-Gazette, The Farnsworth Art Museum (Charles L. Fox purchase prize), The Maine Art Gallery in Wiscasset, The Portland Museum of Art (Maine Biennial), Huston-Tuttle Gallery, Bowdoin College and The Chocolate Church in Bath.
