Oceanside ‘mercies’ Camden Hills in season opener

Mariners hot bats too much for Windjammers

ROCKPORT — The Camden Hills (0-2) softball team hosted Oceanside (1-0) Friday for the Mariners season opener. At the top of the sixth inning, the Mariners plated eight runs to break open an 8-3 score and held off the Windjammers in the bottom of the inning for the 16-3 mercy rule win. The mercy rule in softball is used following a 12-run lead with at least five innings played.

Oceanside scored four in the first inning, three in the second, one in the fourth and eight in the sixth. Camden Hills plated all three of their runs in the third inning.

Paige Tyler was in the circle for the Mariners where she allowed three runs on eight hits and six walks while striking out seven in six innings pitched.

Hilary Merrifield and Gillian Lafleche both pitched for Camden Hills in six innings they combined to allow 16 runs on 14 hits with five walks, while striking out three.

Offensively for the Mariners, Casey Pine had (2 singles, 2 doubles, 3 runs); Ari Curtis (3 singles, 3 runs); Alexis Mazurek (run); Kalyn Grover (2 singles); Roman (run); Madelyn Young (run); Jordan Brackett (run); Brianna Dugan (single, double, 2 runs); Rachel Robinson (single, run); Lauren Miller (single, double, 2 runs); and Krisandra McNichol (run).

For Camden Hills, Laticia Billings (run); Juliana Haynes (2 singles, double); Charlotte Messer (single, run); Maddie Bowman (single); Maddie Wickenden (double); Lafleche (single); and Rachel Pease (single, run).

Oceanside had the game under control when they exploded for eight runs in the top of the sixth inning. Tyler, Brackett, and Dugan walked to load the bases; Robinson singled to score Roman, who had pinch run for Tyler; and, McNichol reached on an error scoring Brackett. Pine then ripped a double scoring Robinson. Curtis then singled scoring McNichol and Pine. Mazurek walked and Grover singled to left field scoring Curtis and Mazurek to finish off the inning.

Oceanside will be back in action Monday, April 27, when they travel to Mount View of Thorndike for a 4 p.m. first pitch. Camden Hills will be hosting Lincoln Academy April 27 with a 4 p.m. start time.
