THOMASTON – The Oceanside (2-0) girls lacrosse game at Sam Pendleton Field with visiting Camden Hills (0-2), was about a team that could finish and a team that had more opportunities, but could not finish. In the end the Mariners captured the 9-4 win over their crosstown rivals.

The majority of this game was played in the Oceanside end of the field as Camden Hills did a great job of attacking the goal, but because of the fine work of goalie Bailee Cox and the Oceanside defense, the Windjammers were unable to take advantage of the opportunities.

“The Oceanside girls played today with the synergy of a well established team,” said Oceanside coach Angie Vachon. “Their team play resulted in a pretty coveted win over our cross town rivals.”

Scoring for the Mariners were, Lily Vachon (3 goals, 4 assists), Alexis Pine (2 goals, 2 assists), Brittany Rytky (2 goals) and Janelle Fowlie and Rebekah Freeman added a goal each.

For Camden Hills, Katherine Orne had two goals; and Willow Grinnell and Hannah Wincklhofer put in a goal each.

Cox had 11 saves in the game for the win while Sara Shafer had four saves in the loss.

In the second period Oceanside’s Kelsey Brooks suffered a sever leg cramp in her calf. She was unable to walk off the field and along with coach Vachon, Camden Hills Hannah Wincklhofer helped to carry her opponent off the field and get her set down to get comfortable.

This was an act of sportsmanship that schools everywhere dream about. Two teams playing for schools that over the years have developed some intense competition. However, when an opposing player steps up and helps their opponent in a time of need, that is what we all hope for.

“I want to send gratitude to Hannah Wincklhofer for her ready assistance in getting Kelsey Brooks off the field after her seized calf muscle,” said coach Vachon. “It’s what this game and the lacrosse community is all about.”

Oceanside will travel to Winslow Monday, May 4 for their next game while Camden Hills will host Windham, Saturday, May 2 at 11 a.m.

The score of this game was originally reported to us ad 8-4, It has since been corrected to 9-4 with Rytky being credited with a second goal according to the home book.
